There are many kinds of wax products with different properties, but their properties and

applications have inherent similarities. As a kind of polymer materials, the definition of

“Wax”is more emphasis on appearance description. It is generally believed that wax-based

products should contain the following characteristics:

1. The room temperature is solid material;

2. Beyond its melting point, the material should have a low viscosity and behave like a

liquid;

3. Insoluble in water.

Some view that some water-soluble polymers such as solid acrylic resin-based copolymers,

rosin, etc. should also belong to wax products, but considering the conventional view in the

industry of water-based coating materials, water-soluble polymers present in the system in a

dissolved state are not included in the wax product.

Introduction of main wax series product：

The most important representative product and performance profiles are as follows:

1. Polyethylene Wax: It also known as low molecular weight polyethylene, the general

molecular weight of 1800 ~ 8000, divided into high-density polyethylene and Low-density

polyethylene, with good physical properties and chemical stability, is the most important

kind of synthetic wax.

2. Polypropylene wax: It also known as low molecular weight polypropylene, high

crystallinity, softening point, hardness, with good physical properties and chemical stability.

Because it is insoluble in water, the wax products can not be used directly in the water-based

system, so they need to be prefabricated processed.

3. Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining. It is usually referred to as solid

paraffin wax. Its main components are n-alkanes, melting point 52-72 °C, density 0.880-

0.915 g/cm3, penetration (1/10 mm) : about 15-20. 

4. The Fischer-tropsch wax, which is polymerized by C0 and H2, is composed of N-alkanes

with almost no branched chain, so it has strong rigidity, high melting point and high

hardness. Due to the possible supply shortage of petrochemical industry in the future, the

market prospect of the coal-based fischer-tropsch wax is promising.

5. Carnauba wax is a kind of ester composed of C20 ~ C30 wax acid and C24 ~ C30 wax

alcohol. The melting point is 81 ~ 86 °C and the density is 0.996 ~ 0.998. Penetration of

about 1, high hardness, coating gloss, easy to polish, easy to emulsify, expensive, “King of

wax”reputation.
