Calcium stearate is used as a heat stabilizer for PVC and as a lubricant and release agent for

a variety of plastics processing. When used as a PVC lubricant, it is generally considered to

be an internal lubricant. Calcium stearate is a stearate of calcium carbonate with strong

polarity, it has a strong polarity. The chemical active point of PVC resin particles can form a

stable complex system with Calcium stearate. However, the two long chain alkyl groups of

the calcium stearate have less compatibility with the polar resins, such as PVC, and form a

local microcosmic two phase interface in the interior of the PVC resin, that is, a lubricating

film. its lubricating film. The microcosmic essence of the lubrication effect is that the force

between the local lubricating interface formed by the long chain alkyl group and the polar

resin chain segment is less than that between the resin chain segment and there are many

small pores between the resin chain segment. Therefore, when the resin segments are

displaced, the alkyl groups which can be deformed arbitrarily are squeezed into the other

pores adjacent to them, thus reducing the resistance of resin segment displacement and

playing the role of internal lubrication.

In practice, calcium stearate, as a lubricant for PVC, does not only play the role of internal

lubrication, but also has a complex lubrication function. In the case of other high internal

lubrication ratio, it will reflect the role of external lubrication. Moreover, it works

synergistically with many lubricants.

The use of Calcium stearate alone in the formulation accelerated plasticization, increased

melt viscosity, increased torque, and has a certain demoulding effect, while the use of

paraffin alone showed delayed plasticization, reduced torque, no demoulding effect.

When Calcium stearate and paraffin wax (polyethylene wax) are mixed in a certain

proportion, the good effect is obtained, and the material torque value can be reduced a lot.

This is due to paraffin wax penetrating into the Calcium stearate molecules, which

strengthens the lubrication effect, it shows a strong synergistic effect and changes the

dispersion of the lubricant.
