Exploring the role of pe wax in powder coatings

The use of polyethylene wax in powder coatings includes polyethylene wax, polypropylene wax, polytetrafluoroethylene wax, polyamide wax, etc. according to their chemical composition. In terms of compatibility and cost-effectiveness, pe wax is good and can meet the general requirements for hardening and scratch resistance, thus having a wide range of applications.

Some wax powders not only have coating hardening and scratch resistance, but also have a certain degree of extinction. For example, polypropylene wax can be used as a substitute for extinction agents in powder coatings that do not require high extinction effects. But at this time, the dosage is generally greater than 2%, and sometimes there are obvious wax particles precipitation in the coating.
In application, wax powder is mostly composite, and there are also two methods of use: pre adding and post mixing. The later mixed wax is micro powder wax with very small particle size, and large particle wax must be mixed and extruded together with the raw material for use.
1. Adding less than 1% flake polyethylene wax to the formula can increase production and reduce mechanical wear during extrusion, especially in situations with more subdivisions, resulting in significant results.
2. Adding 0.5-0.8% polyethylene and amide mixed wax to the formula can improve its dry powder fluidity and achieve even distribution.

3. The smoothness, scratch resistance, degassing, waterproofing, leveling, and reduced gloss of the coating film after addition.
4. Ordinary wax powder can improve film leveling or increase fullness, but there is partial extinction depending on the variety and dosage.
The interaction between different types of wax can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the coating film, but there are also some misconceptions in practical application. For example, adding a small amount of wax in the transfer printing formula is beneficial for paper tearing, and adding too much wax can cause unclear transfer of coating texture.

Some coarser wax particles may be added, resulting in shallow shrinkage holes or particle defects on the coating surface; Some amide waxes are added too much, which can easily cause haze on the surface of the coating and cause serious loss of gloss. Therefore, in practical application, firstly, it is necessary to understand the physical properties of various chemical components of wax powder, and secondly, when wax powder is shared, the dosage should be appropriately controlled to a maximum of 2%.
