Application of polyethylene wax in PVC

In a narrow sense, polyethylene wax is a low relative molecular weight homopolymer polyethylene; In a broad sense, polyethylene wax also includes modified polyethylene wax and copolymerized pe wax. Generally, if a polyethylene polymer cannot provide a certain strength and toughness like a resin, and cannot be processed as a single material into a product that ultimately has a certain function, we can classify it as polyethylene wax.

Polyethylene wax is widely used in plastics as a dispersant for pigments, as a lubricant for PVC blends, as a flow modifier and compatibilizer in PE and PP modifiers.
The full name of PVC is PVC. Its viscous flow temperature is very close to the degradation temperature, so it is easy to undergo various forms of degradation during processing, resulting in loss of usability.
Therefore, heat stabilizers and lubricants must be added to the formulation of PVC blends, the former improving their thermal stability, the latter reducing the friction between PVC molecular chains, and the film release force between PVC melt and metal, improving the convenience of processing PVC into various products. Polyethylene wax and oxidized polyethylene wax are common lubricants in PVC.
During the processing of PVC, there is no pure melt, only secondary particles (100 μ About m, consisting of primary particles and nodules) under the action of heat and mechanical shear, split into small balls (1 μ M or so), the process of the globules dividing again into nodules (100 nm).

This process is usually called gel or plasticization. In order to achieve better mechanical properties, surface properties and processability, the degree of gel is between 70% and 85%.
The proper selection of polyethylene wax can delay or accelerate the gel process. After melting, homopolymer polyethylene wax exists between primary particles or nodules, reducing the friction between primary particles or nodules, thereby reducing the frictional heat generation of the melt, delaying the plasticization of PVC, and improving the thermal stability of PVC.
The oxidized polyethylene wax has a certain compatibility with PVC, which can attach to the surface of nodules, increase the melt viscosity, and slightly promote the gel behavior;
Its other main function is to form a film on the surface of PVC melt and metal, reducing the friction between the melt and processing equipment. It is a good release agent in PVC processing, especially in transparent PVC (organic tin stabilizer) films. Adding an appropriate amount of oxidized polyethylene wax not only has good release performance, but also does not reduce transparency.
Currently, in addition to synthetic polyethylene wax and oxidized polyethylene wax. Paraffin wax, Fischer Tropsch wax, and by-product wax are also widely used in PVC, and they also need to be flexibly matched according to terminal applications.

For example, low melting point paraffin wax can play a role in early lubrication, medium melting point polyethylene wax and Fischer Tropsch wax can play a role in intermediate lubrication, and high melting point oxidized polyethylene wax can play a role in late lubrication.
Some lubricants with limited temperature resistance, such as paraffin and fatty acid esters, are prone to deposit on the die heads of extrusion products and the cooling rollers of calendering films. These substances can have adverse effects on the surface properties of the final products, as well as the working environment and production of on-site workers. Moreover, the compatibility of a single lubricant in PVC is very high. If a composite lubricant package is used, various components cannot tolerate and react with each other, which can easily lead to pressure out.
Therefore, selecting lubricants with stable quality and good temperature resistance based on product applications such as whether printing and spraying are required is very important for smooth production and improving product quality.
